| I just did a metric double century. For those not up on the lingo, that means 200km on my bike. That’s 120 miles. 7 hours of solid pedaling. I was trying to think of a way to write this without tooting my own horn, but I don’t seem to be able to. I guess all those miles took away not only my ability to walk but also to think.
Actually, I shouldn’t toot my own horn too much, since I almost crack about mile 80. I had already eaten all my clif bars and drank all my Gatorade, and I was out of energy. I was getting dizzy and have trouble getting my legs to move. I was also in the middle of Camp Pendelton, which is noticeably short of places to pick up food. Thankfully one of my teammates gave me half a bottle of Cytomax and a Powerbar, and after a few minutes I was fine
After some solid food, and a hot shower, I actually don’t feel too bad, all things considered., but I might feel differently in the morning. Mentally, its nice to know that I can push myself that hard and as long as I give it enough calories to work, my body will keep going.
Last week was the first week of classes, and with great trouble, I narrowed it down to three. I’ve got introduction to economics, which I’m not to excited about, but it fulfills my last GE requirement, and won’t take too much work. Second I’ve got Politics and Policy-making in San Diego. It taught by two first time instructors but people with lots of experience. One is the city manager of Chula Vista, and the other was the Pete Willson’s chief of staff when he was mayor, an SD county water board member and a local political consultant. It looks like I will learn a lot of very practical stuff about city politics. Sadly I had to drop two other Poli Sci course that look interesting one on European Integration and the other on European Political Development 1000-2000ad. My last course is in the theatre department and is called “Second Skin: Technology and the Body in Fashion, Art and Performance.” It is being taught by a costume designer but looks to be more of a class in art criticism. The class only has 15 students and looks like it is going to be a lot of fun.
In case you’ve forgotten (or it never got posted), the reason I’m only taking three class is that I’m working two jobs. I have no monetary reason to be working two jobs, but for some reason I am Job numero uno is still working in the Sixth college Core Sequence (CAT) office. I hope to get some interesting projects to work on, but so far its just been making copies and filling papers. I can’t complain too much though because I set my own hours, the pay is generous, and the work is easy. Job Dos is technical director for the spring musical at Clairemont High School. So far the job has been less about technical directing and more about getting high schools to actually do decent work. Still we’ve gotten a fair amount done, and the sense of accomplishment is certainly a lot better than filling papers. I get paid a flat amount for the show, so I should be encouraged to make the most efficient use of time as possible, but no matter what, I have a feeling its going to work out to less than minimum wage.
And speaking of time, I should stop wasting it with blogging, and see if my brain is working well enough to do something more productive.

| Crunch time.
I had a nice relaxing thanksgiving break. I enjoyed hanging out with family I hadn't seen in a while, and also drinking lots of good beer. Me and dad got to go out my my uncles new, ridiculously fancy sailboat. IT was a nice relaxing afternoon, although the wind wasn't great. Supposedly their are some good pictures of me at the helm, with the wind in my hair and the sun on my face. I actually didn't even need to steer, since when you buy a boat costing six digits, it can sail itself.
Marty (my brother) finally made the trip down to see me and we had lots of fun, riding bikes, eating out and drinking lots of beer. We made it to the super fancy new Stone World Bistro and Beer Gardens, which had an amazing selection of beer and some really bold choices in the food department, but it was a bit pricey to make it a regular dinning experience. We also made it to Pizza port, who also has an amazing selection of beer, although it a noticeably lower key atmosphere. We also got Ethiopian, which is always a treat.
Classes ended on a slightly sour note, I got a worse grade than I was expecting on one paper, but I have the chance to revise it for a better grade. I had to argue against raising the minimum wage in my policy analysis class, which even though i had done i ton of research, I had trouble actually articulating my argument when i got in front of the class.
I think with a lot of work this weekend, I can pull off another quarter of honors. But right now All i can think about, thanks to the cold weather is snowboarding.
Today was my first day off, and while i should have been getting a solid start on my studying, I only got 75 pages read. Tomorrow my airport card gets pulled out, and my bikes locked up. My only distraction will be laundry.
It's crunch time

What's new you ask, well let me tell you.
*new congress. So as expected the Democrats took the house, and got the Senate too, of course they won't be able to immediately able to fix everything that BushCo has fucked up, but at least they won't make it any worse. I normally despise the horse race election coverage, but i had a lot of fun at the UCSD election night party. Th turn out was quite good and we got to drink beers and talk politics as we watched they different networks making predictions. The highlight of the night was the every-five-minutes updates on the Virginia senate race. When when took the lead, a huge cheer erupted in the room.
*New Job. Its not like i didn't have enough stuff going on already, but i got an offer I could refuse. There are always random job opportunities posted to the theatre list-serv, but they almost never interest me, as they are for extras for a commercial or for doing elementary school puppet shows. Last week however, one caught my attention: Clairemont high school was looking for a technical director for their spring musical, Bat Boy. I sent off a quick email to the drama teacher with a bit about myself and my theatre experience. He called back a few days later, and we chatted for a bit about what the requirements of the job were and some other basic stuff. He said he'd talked to a few people about the job, but would love for me to come in to chat some more. A few days later, when i walked into the classroom an asked for Mr. Allen, the student answered "Who are you?" I said my name is Kevin...And the student jumped in, "oh you're our new technical director!" I guess i got the job and didn't even know if. The theatre is pretty old and doesn't have the nicest stuff, but it should be fun. The pay is a flat rate for the show, but I don't think we are going to do anything too complicated, so the pay might be good if I can get everything done fast. Even if the hourly turns out to be bad I will still be having fun. And in the meantime I will be having fun on my new bike, which cost me 2/3 orfmy salary.
I had been looked at picking a new racing bike through the team, and converting my current road bike into a full-tim commuter for a while, but i had been waiting till the 2007 catalog came it. Sadly there was nothing in the new catalog with the level of compontents i wanted for a prirce I was willing to pay. A few days later however, I was browsing craigslist and something caught my eye. The next thing I knew I was out a fat wad of cash and the proud owner of a top-of-the line racing bike. In proper Kevin fashion I got a bike worth over $2500 for less than a quarter of that. Here's the rundown Frame: Tsunami Road Pro 7005 Aluminum. Fork: Time Carbon Equipe Pro, 1" steel steerer Headset: Chris King NoThreads Stem: Litespeed Titanium Steatpost: Easton Carbon Shifters: Campanaglo Chorus Ergo 9s. Derailers: Campanaglo Chorus Ergo 9s. Crank: Shimano Dura-Ace 53/39 Cassete: American Classic 12-23 Pedals: Speedplay zero titanium. Brakes McManhon Racing Delta Wheels: Front: Chris King hub laced to a campanaglo aero rim. Rear Dura-Ace laced to a Mavic Aero rim
also included were a pari of carbon soled racing shoes, which actually fit better than my old shoes.
FYI: the pedals, stem, seat-post and headset would be worth what i paid for the bike For those not in the know, that is all top of the line, or second from the top level stuff. It's a few years old, but technology hasn't changed, except for the fork. I needed to get a new chain and adjust the derailer, and rewrap the handlebars, but other than that the bike was in perfect shape. The guys at the shop were amazed at the deal I got, and noted the the chris king stuff will be the last headset and hub I will ever have to buy, as the stuff literally last forever. The purchase also happen to match up with some of my swap meet purchases. Three years ago I bough some Tsunami socks (not realizing that was a bike brand at the time), and the yellow and blue waves on the socks match the yellow and blue of the bike perfectly At this years swap meet I picked up a pari of speedplay shorts and a couple pairs of socks for cheap, even though I didn't own speedplay pedals. Now I Don't feel like a pouser. Now the trick is actually finding time to ride.
New classes: My tentative schedule looks like this. Econ 1 (my last GE, and also useful for urban studies), European Integration, European Political Development. and Poltics and Policy-making in San Diego. Everything is Monday Wednesday Friday and has me out by 2. except for monday which has a 6-8 class. It looks like the bulk of work on Bat boy is going to be on Thursdays, when there is a 3 hour block of theatre classes, and then some extra after school time. Weekends should stay open for bike riding and I should have time for 5-10 hours a week with Sixth college, just to keep a little extra change in my pocket.New congress, New job, New bike, New classes
